Iowa State Senate 35 Special Election, 2025
{{#electioninfobox:28}} Iowa held a special election for its 35th Senate District on January 28, 2025, to fill the seat until the 2026 elections. The 35th Senate district consists of Clinton County, as well as parts of Jackson County and Scott County.
In what was widely considered an upset, Democratic nominee Mike Zimmer defeated Republican nominee Katie Whittington by 339 votes (3.64 percent)[1], flipping the seat to the Democrats. As a result of the election, Republicans hold a 34-16 majority in the Iowa State Senate.[2]
The district was expected to be safely Republican, as it had previously voted for Republican Chris Cournoyer by a margin of 61-39 in 2022, as well as Republican Donald Trump by a margin of 60-39 in the 2024 United States presidential election.
