George Atkinson defeated John Langdon by a margin of 258 votes (3.65%). However, since no candidate received the majority of the vote, the election was sent to the New Hampshire General Court. The court chose John Langdon, despite George Atkinson having won the overall popular vote. Langdon was sworn in as the second President of New Hampshire on June 6, 1785.
