{{#electioninfobox:38}} New Hampshire held a governor (then called president) election on March 10, 1789. The candidates in this election were John Sullivan, John Pickering, who was acting governor, and Josiah Bartlett, alongside a dozen minor candidates.
Former governor John Sullivan defeated John Pickering in the popular vote by a margin of 169 votes (1.97%). As no candidate secured a majority, the election was sent to the New Hampshire General Court. The court chose popular vote winner John Sullivan. As a result, he gained Federalist control of the governor's office. Sullivan was sworn in on June 6, 1789.[1]
